A stinky question ¹

The plumber is working on the sewerage pipe today. It stinks! How come the smell from the sewerage pipe doesn't get back into the toilet?
  1. Can you give an explanation for the student's remarks in the cartoon?
  2. Try to estimate how many times toilets are flushed in Melbourne each day. You will not find the answer by looking up books, but by using your common sense, making a few estimates, working in a group and sharing your ideas. Compare your answer with the rest of the class.
