Apply for a Melbourne Water Young Watercare grant!

Do you teach or live in the Port Phillip and Westerport region? Do you have a terrific idea for a river health project which would involve your students or a youth organisation, and would welcome funding support to implement the project?

As part of the wider Junior Landcare Grants Program, Melbourne Water and Landcare Australia have joined forces once again to present the 2007 Melbourne Water Young Watercare Grants program.

This year, $88,000 has been made available. Schools and youth organisations in the Port Phillip and Westernport region are eligible for up to $2,000 to fund projects which would protect the health of local rivers and creeks. More than 100 schools have already shared in the $190,000 from the 2003 - 2006 programs.

View the 2006 grant recipients and their projects.

The closing date for applications has been extended to 31 August 2007. Grant application forms and guidelines can be found on Landcare Australia's website. Details are also available by calling 1800 151 105.

The Source is now online

Looking for easy to read articles on water issues?

Check out The Source, Melbourne Water's online magazine, designed to keep the community up to date with the latest water news and storage information. Previously available quarterly in print, we've now taken an important step towards conserving more trees and water and making The Source more topical by moving to an online, monthly publication.

The latest edition features an article that highlights Melbourne Water's involvement in delivering the Victorian Government's new $4.9 billion water plan, a desalination plant and a water grid to secure water supplies. Read what John Corboy of the Food Bowl Alliance and Professor Peter Cullen from the Wentworth Group of concerned scientists have to say about the plan.

Melbourne Water and The Age present "Water, the Environment and Climate Change"

Yarra River

Melbourne Water and The Age recently produced Our Yarra - a superpanorama map, with a host of interesting information about the Yarra catchment together with a community call to action to help protect our river.

Students now have an eye-catching ready reference where they can check out the river's history, learn how the river shaped our city and, in turn, how our city reshaped its river, keep up to date with water-sensitive urban design and other solutions to help protect the health of the Yarra. A fantastic giant poster for your classroom too!

Released on August 5 as a liftout with the Sunday Age, copies can be ordered from The Age.

Our Yarra is the third supplement in Melbourne Water's education partnership with The Age. Earlier this year, we produced Inside the water cycle (March 07) and The Environment (June 07).

Melbourne Water's Spring 2007 Frog Census

Melbourne Water Frog Census

A community-based frog mapping program, the Melbourne Water Frog Census gives the community an opportunity to learn more about their local waterways and the amphibian residents that call them home. The data that volunteers collect helps us map local frog populations in the greater Melbourne area, providing an indication for the health of our rivers, creeks and wetlands.

In its sixth year, the Melbourne Water Frog Census program is gearing up for the Spring 2007 census. This is a wonderful opportunity for your school and students to get involved, learn what impacts your local river or creek, and the health of frog populations in the area.

Information sessions are being held at various locations around Melbourne in September. Come along to find out how you and your school can participate in the Melbourne Water Spring 2007 Frog Census, or hop onto melbournewater.com.au/frogs to find out more.

Register online for the evening information sessions and the Frog ID sessions, or call 13 17 22 - bookings are essential.
