The Eastern Treatment Plant at Bangholme, south-east of Melbourne, was opened in 1975 to serve Melbourne's growing population. It treats approximately 40 per cent of Melbourne's sewage, or about 370 million litres a day.

This interactive virtual tour of the Eastern Treatment Plant at Bangholme includes:

  • a fully narrated (audio and text) guided tour of the plant. Follow the treatment processes and see how recycled water is becoming a valuable resource used by the community
  • an extensive "encyclopedia", frequently asked questions and glossary covering all aspects of the plant
  • an extensive photo gallery of over 200 images, 10 panoramas and 19 video clips
  • two mini documentaries "How the plant works" and "Innovations to produce high quality recycled water".

The Explorer also contains an innovative research tool, The Backpack, which allows you to collect text and images for use in assignments, projects and presentations.
