The Eastern Treatment Plant provides an interesting account of how engineers used basic scientific principles, not only to solve the problems associated with sewage, but also to use the resources in the sewage itself. This is a how a problem turned into a solution.

The first four worksheets in the 'Before the tour' section in Resources list provide activities that can be completed prior to a tour. The first worksheet is a brief overview of the Eastern Treatment Plant and the following three worksheets cover experiments that highlight the major scientific principles used in the recycling procedures at the Plant.

The three worksheets in the 'On the tour' section provide a focus for the students' investigation of the Eastern Treatment Plant. During the tour, students are able to cut-and-paste text and images from the virtual page into a document as the first stage of preparing a report or presentation.
